Leesburg (November 22, 2015) — Heritage High School senior Carrie Lee has signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her swimming career at the Georgia Institute of Technology starting in the 2016-2017 school year.
“I feel that Georgia Tech is a school that will help me be successful after college,” the 5-foot-7 Lee said. “The facilities, like the weight room and pool, are also top-notch. I’ve never seen a prettier pool. [They also have what I’m going to major in], computer science.”
Verbally committing back on October 9, Lee is relieved the process is finally over.
“[To be committed] feels pretty awesome,” said Lee who swims for Snow Swimming. “I’ve been [in]this process since last September, and it feels good to be finally done with everything. It’s a really stressful experience.”
As swim season is right around the corner, Lee and the Heritage Pride girls team are coming off a third place VHSL 4A state meet finish in 2014-2015, where Lee finished second in both the 100-meter butterfly and backstroke, along with a first place with her 200-meter medley relay team.
“I would like to end with knowing I’ve tried my hardest,” Lee said. “Doubling with high school swim and club swimming can start to be a lot on a person. I just want to have fun this year. Because I’m in college, most people would assume I would stop trying; I think that’s the craziest thing ever. I want to get better this year to show how good of a swimmer I can be and impress my coaches.”
The Leesburg-native spent her childhood summers at her family’s beach house in Delaware. At 8-years-old, she started swimming on a summer league team there.
“I was naturally good at it and my mom pushed me to do club,” Lee said. “I started to get faster and made USA swimming junior nationals and nationals and Grand Prix when I was 14. That really got me hype. Unfortunately, after that I stopped dropping time and haven’t really dropped time since. The thing that keeps me going is knowing that I should be faster than I am right now and I want to prove that. My coaches are also always motivating me at my lowest points.”
