Loudoun County, Va. — Another few weeks of girls volleyball action has the LoCo Top 5 teams shuffling once again. Several teams have active win streaks of five or more, while other teams suffered losses to tough Top 5 opponents, moving them down in the rankings. As the end of the regular season draws near, the pressure to deliver will be felt among all teams as they vie for favorable seeding in the district and region tournaments. Several more head-to-head competitions within the Top 5 will make for an interesting finish, and it will be exciting to see how the next couple weeks play out.
1. Heritage (+3)
Five straight sweeps over the past two weeks have propelled the Pride (3-0, 10-2) into the No. 1 spot for the first time. Heritage took down Riverside, Osbourn Park, Broad Run, Stone Bridge, and Woodgrove in dominating fashion and currently sit at the top of the Region 4C rankings. Senior setter Annabelle Kim has her choice of offensive weapons, as senior outside hitters Kaylee Mehta and Jasmine McBorrough and junior right side hitter Jocelyn Keller can bury the ball from the pins, and senior middle hitter Shannon Treloar and sophomore middle hitter Nicole Holokai can consistently find open spots on the court. The Pride will look to continue their winning ways when they travel down the road to rival Loudoun County on October 8 before continuing with Dulles District action against Rock Ridge on October 13 and Dominion on October 15.
2. Independence (-)
The Tigers (10-0, 14-2) currently have the longest active win streak at 13 after picking up a sweep over Osbourn Park and 4-set victories in their most recent games against Gainesville, Woodgrove, Battlefield, and Osbourn. A complete team effort has led Independence to the success that they’ve achieved thus far. All players on the court make contributions, which enables the team to work together cohesively. Sophomore setter Caroline Calaluca and freshman setter Abigail Melendez run a balanced offense, utilizing all their hitters, including senior right side hitter Kaelyn Wharton, junior middle hitter Victoria Liakos, and freshman outside hitter Leyla Landry. The Tigers will close out their Cedar Run District schedule with games against Unity Reed on October 13 and Gainesville on October 14 in hopes of claiming the number one seed for the district tournament the following week.
3. Potomac Falls (+2)
Although they were pushed to 5 by John Champe, the Panthers (6-2, 11-3) ultimately came away with the win and then took down crosstown rival Dominion in 4. Back-to-back statement sweeps of Freedom and No. 5 Lightridge give Potomac Falls the slight edge over other Potomac District teams. Senior outside hitter Lacey Bogues and junior outside hitter Ellie Brumback continue to carry the offensive load, while senior libero Ela Yilmaz leads the team defensively. Another big matchup with No. 4 Briar Woods on October 8 could provide early insights into who will claim the regular season crown in the Potomac District. The Panthers will then face Stone Bridge on October 13, Riverside on October 15, and John Champe on October 19 in continued district action.
4. Briar Woods (+2)
A thrilling 5-set victory over No. 5 Lightridge, as well as sweeps of Stone Bridge, Freedom, and Loudoun Valley, bring the Falcons (7-1, 13-2) back into the LoCo Top 5. The team as a whole has been performing well, and players in all positions on the court are contributing points. Junior middle hitters Avery Sexton and Bris Yehudah put up big blocks at the net, while junior outside hitter Allie Bowen, sophomore outside hitter Marisa Barreto, and sophomore right side hitter Summer Syed terminate balls from the pins. Briar Woods also scores a fair number of points from behind the service line, as tough serves from every player lead to aces. The Falcons will be looking to avenge an earlier season loss when they face No. 3 Potomac Falls on October 8. They will follow that up with a rematch against No. 5 Lightridge on October 13 and a final regular season home game against John Champe on October 15.
5. Lightridge (-4)
The Lightning (6-2, 11-3) dropped a couple tough Potomac District games against No. 4 Briar Woods in 5 and No. 3 Potomac Falls in 3 and as a result fall to No. 5 on the LoCo Top 5. Wins against Tuscarora, Riverside, and John Champe in between the losses still keep them in the hunt for the regular season district title. The team relies heavily on junior middle hitter Giuliana Mastrangelo, who controls the net both defensively behind a strong block and offensively with a quick arm. The Lightridge setters (senior Jessica Nolte and junior Olivia Nilsen) distribute the ball well and incorporate all hitters in the offense, while junior libero Sofia Gelston provides stability in the back court. The Bolts will be put to the test when they travel to Freedom on October 8 and host No. 4 Briar Woods in a highly-anticipated rematch on October 13 before closing out the regular season with games against Stone Bridge on October 15 and Riverside on October 20.
On the bubble: Freedom (-3)
After reverse-sweeping John Champe and being pushed to 5 against Riverside, the Eagles (5-3, 13-3) lost straight-set matches to No. 4 Briar Woods and No. 3 Potomac Falls, which drops them just outside the LoCo Top 5. A rebound sweep of Stone Bridge still keeps Freedom in the mix, but it will be an uphill battle from here. While the Eagles regularly utilize everyone on their roster, junior outside hitter Irina Padden, sophomore outside hitter Laylah Hampton, and junior middle hitter Leila Bataineh are the biggest offensive contributors. Big matches in the upcoming weeks against No. 5 Lightridge (October 8), John Champe (October 13), Tuscarora (October 15), Riverside (October 19) and No. 4 Briar Woods (October 20) will determine if Freedom can break back into the Top 5.
