Loudoun County, Va. — Since the last edition, there has been a lot of movement in the standings and the LoCo Top 5 rankings. Big district matchups, as well as head-to-head competitions within the Top 5, have shifted some things around with the teams featured in the previous post. The continuation of district games creates even more opportunities for chaos and surprises, as anything is possible on any given night when both teams show up ready to compete. With the regular season nearing the halfway point, teams are likely solidifying lineups and strengthening team chemistry in preparation for the back half of the season and the postseason. The regular season champion in each of the four districts still remains to be seen, but exciting matches in the coming weeks will reveal the top contenders as the 2026 campaign continues to unfold.
1. Lightridge (+3)
The Lightning (4-0, 8-1) have not dropped a set since a 3-1 loss to Loudoun County on September 1. What’s even more impressive is that several wins over the last couple weeks came against top opponents, including No. 3 Freedom, No. 4 Heritage, and No. 5 Potomac Falls. Lightridge also swept their way through the Titan Tussle Tournament on September 19, claiming the championship with a perfect 5-0 record. Junior middle hitter Giuliana Mastrangelo continues to dominate at the net, and junior outside hitter Gia Molfino is building consistency from the pin. Senior setter Jessica Nolte and junior setter Olivia Nilsen are distributing the ball nicely, as the defense and serve-receive of junior libero Sofia Gelston allows them to run an in-system offense. Next up for the Bolts is a highly-anticipated match with Briar Woods on September 22. After that they will host Tuscarora on September 24, travel to Riverside on September 29, and host John Champe on September 30.
2. Independence (+3)
The Tigers (6-0, 9-2) are a perfect 5-0 in their last several matches, including quality wins against Loudoun County and district foe Patriot. Independence is currently at the top of the standings in the Cedar Run District and will hope to remain there as they play the back half of their district schedule in the coming weeks. Led by senior right side hitter Kaelyn Wharton and junior middle hitter Victoria Liakos, Independence is also building up younger players like freshman outside hitter Leyla Landry, sophomore setter Caroline Calaluca, and freshman setter Abigail Melendez. With their sights set on a district championship, the Tigers will look to continue their win streak when they host Gainesville on September 22, travel to Woodgrove on September 23 and Battlefield on September 29, and return home against Osbourn on October 1.
3. Freedom (-1)
After picking up wins against Rock Ridge, Stone Bridge, and Osbourn Park, the Eagles (2-1, 10-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of No. 1 Lightridge. But they quickly rebounded with a sweep of Loudoun Valley to get back on track. Junior outside hitter Irina Padden utilizes a variety of shots to find ways to score and also contributes defensively in the back row. The power of junior middle hitter Leila Bataineh is felt both at the net and behind the service line. The team as a whole is well-rounded, as several players see time at libero, and a 6-2 offense allows for many opportunities in the front row. Freedom will continue Potomac District play against John Champe (September 22), Riverside (September 24), Briar Woods (September 29), and No. 5 Potomac Falls (October 1) in the coming weeks.
4. Heritage (+2)
Heritage (3-0, 5-2) was another victim of No. 1 Lightridge, but the Pride bounced back quickly with a win over district foe Dominion and a 5-set victory against No. 5 Potomac Falls in front of the whole school in an exhibition match the afternoon of September 11. Heritage followed that up with sweeps of Loudoun Valley and Tuscarora the following week to establish the early claim of the top spot in the Dulles District standings. Senior setter Annabelle Kim runs an efficient offense, utilizing the power and placement of her middle hitters (senior Shannon Treloar and sophomore Nicole Holokai) as often as possible. Senior outside hitters Jasmine McBorrough and Kaylee Mehta are also big threats from the pin, bringing the heat and terminating balls. Heritage will be on the road next against Riverside on September 22 and Osbourn Park on September 23 before returning home to host Broad Run on September 29 and Stone Bridge on October 1.
5. Potomac Falls (-2)
After dropping a 5-set match to No. 4 Heritage and getting swept by No. 1 Lightridge, the Panthers (2-2, 6-3) turned things around to blank Briar Woods and Riverside in a couple statement victories. Potomac Falls has had some close sets and some close matches, but they earned the edge over Briar Woods to make it on the LoCo Top 5 due to the head-to-head win over the Falcons. At times it seems as though the offense is still trying to find its rhythm, but senior outside hitter Lacey Bogues and junior outside hitter Ellie Brumback are consistent contributors. Senior libero Ela Yilmaz anchors the defense and provides experience and leadership when the team needs it most. The Panthers will continue with Potomac District matches when they travel to Stone Bridge on September 22 and host John Champe on September 24. A cross-town rivalry game against Dominion on September 29 will precede the highly-anticipated rematch with No. 3 Freedom on October 1 where Potomac Falls will look to avenge an early-season loss.
On the bubble: Briar Woods (-5)
Although the Falcons (3-1, 8-2) headlined the previous LoCo Top 5, big performances from other teams, coupled with some tough losses to Millbrook and No. 5 Potomac Falls, drop Briar Woods just outside the official list. The Falcons picked up a few wins against Riverside, Stone Bridge, and John Champe to remain within striking distance of the top spot in the competitive Potomac District. Junior outside hitter Allie Bowen continues to lead the way on offense, as sophomore setter Kayla Chang finds her in all areas of the court. Senior libero Kaitlin Tan not only keeps balls alive on defense, but also contributes with aces from behind the service line. Briar Woods will have an opportunity to prove they deserve a spot in the Top 5 when they face No. 1 Lightridge on September 22. They will follow that up with matches against Stone Bridge on September 24, No. 3 Freedom on September 29, and Riverside on October 1.
