Leesburg, Va. — The Riverside High School softball team cruised to a 22-1 win over Heritage High School on April 6, in a statement win behind sophomore Annika Dunn’s complete game performance.
“She’s key. I mean everything starts and ends on the mound,” Riverside head coach Samantha Ingersoll said. “She had a fantastic game tonight, and I couldn’t ask for more from her.”
[adrotate banner=”9″]The Rams got Dunn an early lead, putting together a four-run first inning from which they’d never look back. They proceeded to score six in the second inning and an astonishing ten runs in the fifth before the game was called.
Dunn helped herself as well, stringing together a game-high four RBI on a game-high four hits.
“One of the big things from us is that we focused tonight,” Ingersoll said. “I told them ‘go out, be aggressive, get on the first strike that you get,’ and they executed very well.”
In the circle for Riverside, Dunn was outstanding, striking out five while allowing just one earned run. Dunn loves to read her batter and scope out the play before.
“I was just focusing on their placement in the box and seeing if they’re in the front of the box or back, close to the plate or away from it and use that as a marker,” Dunn said.
While the score skewed one way, the Lady Pride made a couple of great plays throughout the game, including a sliding outfield snag in center to end the top of the third.
The Rams were just too powerful and too locked in knocking in run after run.
“We had great discipline at the plate,” Dunn said. “Everyone was looking for their pitch and hitting the pitch we wanted.”
