Leesburg, Va. (September 17, 2014) – On September 17, Leesburg rivals Loudoun County High School and Heritage High School met at Loudoun County to support pediatric cancer in their Battle of the ‘Burg volleyball match. The Raiders swept the Pride in just three sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-16).
Loudoun County senior Addi Williams organized the special event including a Raider Riot “Gold Out.” Money from the event was donated to Kyle’s Kamp, an organization that helps support childhood cancer research.
“It was really special. Addi organized this very well, and I really wanted to play well for the kids,” said Loudoun County junior hitter Taylor Borup.
After an unforgettable ceremony for pediatric cancer honoring eight kids, the Lady Raiders came out strong to begin the night.
Loudoun County took the first set in front of a fiery Raider Riot crowd – which filled the home bleachers with gold t-shirts – 25-15.
“It’s nice to be at home. To play in our home gym, with our home crowd and then to have that kind of a program to support as well is tremendous,” said Loudoun County head coach Sherrilyn Hanna.
Loudoun County stayed hot in the second set as they defeated Heritage 25-11. Borup led the Raiders as she consistently troubled the Pride with her hard hitting kills and timely drop shots.
“I think if we take this momentum into the next game it’ll really help. We really wanted to make tonight about the kids and really play for them,” Borup said.
The Pride fought hard in the third set but couldn’t seem to overcome Loudoun County’s momentum. The Raiders took the third set and the match with a 25-16 win.
“We played with a lot of energy tonight and that’s a key of volleyball,” Hanna said. “We’re just working on one game at a time then moving into the next one. We brought a lot of energy into the gym tonight and we hope to carry that into practice and into our next game.”
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when the Raiders host the Woodgrove Wolverines while the Pride host the Rock Ridge Phoenix.
