By Owen Gotimer LoCoSports Editor Ashburn (Dec. 28, 2014) – Broad Run High School junior forward Mariah Leonard knew she would have an opportunity to shine in the primetime game of the 2014 Maroon & Gold Classic basketball tournament’s quarterfinal round against her former Spartan assistant coach and now Rock Ridge High School head coach Jaclyn Cummings. “We were on a little bit of a losing streak, and we really wanted to break it,” Leonard said. “In the locker room, I just told them we need to go out there and play like we can, and we did.”
By Owen Gotimer LoCoSports Editor Purcellville (Dec. 23, 2014) – The second half of the boys varsity basketball game between Loudoun County High School (3-4) and Loudoun Valley High School (3-6) on Dec. 22 in Purcellville started much like the first half as the score was tied, the Raiders had possession and emotions were flying high. One evident difference permeated the second half though: the boys in blue and gold wanted their third win in a row. The Raiders got just that as they defeated their longtime rival-Vikings, 57-47, with a terrific second half effort.
By Owen Gotimer LoCoSports Editor Ashburn (Dec. 21, 2014) – For the first time in Loudoun County’s history, a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference basketball team made its way inside Loudoun’s boundaries to play a public school in LCPS, according to Stone Bridge High School (5-2) assistant coach Michael Prince. On Dec. 20, Bishop Ireton High School (2-7) arrived at Stone Bridge’s front doors to compete in a non-conference boys varsity basketball match up as the Bulldogs toppled the Cardinals, 67-35.
By Owen Gotimer LoCoSports Editor Sterling (Dec. 17, 2014) – As the halftime buzzer sounded during the boys edition of the Battle of Route 7 varsity basketball doubleheader featuring the Dominion Titans and Potomac Falls Panthers, the public address announcer asked everyone to remain seated for a special ceremony. On Aug. 28, 2011, United States Army Spc. and Potomac Falls High School graduate Doug Green (2006) of the 25th infantry division, 3rd battalion was killed in action at the age of 23 during his second tour in Afghanistan while in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
