Sterling, Va. — Led by sophomore Mackenzie Cunnane, senior Abby Harter, and junior Mackenzie McConagha, the Briar Woods High School girls swim team claimed their third straight VHSL Region 5C championship on February 8 in Sterling. Cunnane won the 50-yard freestyle and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle, Harter won the 200-yard individual medley, and McConagha won the 100-yard backstroke. The Falcons also swept the relay events with Harter and McConagha leading the charge in the 200-yard medley relay and Cunnane, Harter, and McConagha helping Briar Woods win the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Sterling, Va. — Led by juniors Christopher Kopac and Robert Quan the Riverside High School boys swim team finished runners up at the VHSL Region 5C championship on February 8 in Sterling. Kopac won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while Quan won the 200-yard individual medley and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke. Kopac and Quan also helped the Rams win the 400-yard freestyle relay. Also on the boys side, Briar Woods senior Jack Moore won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke and Rock Ridge senior Trace Wall won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. South Riding, Va. — Eight Loudoun schools – including Broad Run, Dominion, John Champe, Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls, Riverside, Stone Bridge, and host Freedom – competed in the Starfish Invitational at Freedom High School in South Riding on January 25. New Trier High School swept the individual all-arounds and team competitions in both the gold and black division. Sterling, Va. — Heritage High School freshman Julia Welch claimed the all-around (37.150) win at the Park View Invitational on January 11, leading the Pride to the team championship. Welch won the vault with a 9.700, placed second on the bars with a 8.900, third on the beam with a 9.175, and third on the floor with a 9.375.
