Leesburg (June 27, 2016) — Loudoun County High School senior Marley Blycher has decided to continue her lacrosse career at Wingate University starting in the 2017-2018 academic year.
“I chose Wingate for many reasons,” the 5-foot-11 goalie said. “One of the reasons was that I felt comfortable walking around the campus. I am very excited to attend such a beautiful school that takes pride in their academics and supports their student athletes.”
Wingate University is a private liberal arts school located in North Carolina. It offers 35 majors for the 2,500 students there.
“I plan to get a masters in physical therapy at Wingate,” Blycher said. “I never want to leave the world of sports, and I like working with people.”
Blycher has been playing lacrosse since she was nine-years-old. Overall, she’s played for eight years of which six years were spent in the net.
“My first coach, Pat Flynn, had such enthusiasm and love for the game which definitely inspired me to be the best player I could be. My current goalie coach, Meg Huether, has also helped me improve tremendously in more ways than I can count,” Blycher said. “My parents have helped me stay motivated on and off the field and have spent countless hours cheering me on. My brother goes outside and passes with me in the backyard whenever we can to always get reps in. I can’t thank these people enough.”
This past year, the junior was the starting varsity goalie for Loudoun County High School.
“Our high school season didn’t end how I hoped. We had a lot of injuries and some bumps in the road, and I thought we were going to win districts,” Blycher said. “I hope next year we can put ourselves in the state tournament. There is a lot of talent on County’s team, we just need to tap into using it.”
When Blycher isn’t playing for the Raiders, she’s playing for her club team, Capital Lacrosse Club. This club is one of the premier high school girls lacrosse clubs in the country. Ever since the start of Blycher’s lacrosse career, she has won two state championships and even went 17-0 her freshman year.
“The bonds I’ve made with the girls on my Capital team are definitely going to last a long time,” Blycher said.
Women’s lacrosse at Wingate ended their 2016 season 12-5. They are led by head coach Caline Olmsted.
”I loved the group of girls they had on the team. The coach takes what she does very seriously, which I love,” Blycher said. “Wingate’s team already possesses so much talent and personality, but I hope to add my own style in. I knew I wanted to play college lacrosse, so it’s very rewarding to finally fulfill that dream. I have been searching for a college since freshmen year and committing was by far the most exciting moment of my lacrosse career.”
