Ashburn (December 27, 2012) – Broad Run High School’s offensive execution and defensive tenacity allowed for transition baskets and an advantage in ball control against Briar Woods in the first round of the Honda of Dulles Battle of Ashburn Tournament on Thursday night. The Spartans secured the victory, 85-63, thanks to a kick start from their bench.
Starting the game on the poor end of a 10-4 run, the Broad Run starters looked out-matched and out of condition so Spartans head coach John Costello quickly pulled all five starters. Entering the game were senior Mitch Pittman, juniors Khiorie Stewart, Justin Hart and Chris Coggins and freshman Jaleel Robinson … and they made a powerful statement. Stewart led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, while Coggins finished with 18 points, 12 points more than his previous season high.
The high scoring junior duo was aided by junior shooting guard Michael Martinez who added eight points including two momentum shifting 3-pointers.
For most of the second half, the Spartans’ game plan seemed to be get the ball to Stewart, simply because he was not missing jumpers. They did just that adding nine team assists, mostly finding Stewart on the perimeter.
Broad Run’s bench stat line looks a whole lot more impressive than their starters’ numbers as the bench scored 58 points, brought down 18 rebounds, stole five passes, blocked a shot, assisted their teammates seven times and had one less turnover than the starting five. But more than the stat line, the bench looked much more relaxed and more confident on the floor taking on the Briar Woods’ starters for most of the game without breaking down fundamentally.
Falcons’ senior point guard Kevin Galang led Briar Woods with 18 points and senior forward Jake Ryan added 17 points and six rebounds.
Broad Run improved to 4-5 on the season while Briar Woods, which got the season off to a delayed start after the football team’s run to a third straight state title, fell to 2-4.
