Loudoun County, Va. — As the high school football season starts in Loudoun County, a few local teams have started to stand out from the crowd, while several others are potential contenders. In a four-region county, we wanted a way to put things into perspective. Enter: the LoCo Top 5.

Broad Run put up 50+ points for the second straight week, defeating Dominion 58-0 on September 13 in Week 3. While senior quarterback Mitch Griffis has the Spartans rolling, the gunslinger credits his offensive line for keeping the training moving. In three games, Griffis hasn’t been sacked.
1b. Stone Bridge (3-0) —
Like Broad Run did the week before, Stone Bridge dominated Brooke Point, 42-7, in Week 3. There’s still no clear separation between the Spartans and Bulldogs, and we’ll have to wait until Week 5 to see if any separation starts to happen as both teams have Week 4 byes.
3. Tuscarora (2-1) +1
Coming into their Week 3 matchup at No. 4, Tuscarora travelled to then No. 3 Woodgrove looking to avenge a 2018 regular season loss to the eventual VHSL 4A State champion Wolverines. The 2018 matchup proved to be an offensive slugfest as the teams combined to score 70 points. The 2019 matchup fared a bit differently as three special teams plays and a goal line stand by the Tuscarora defense proved to be the difference as the Huskies held off the Wolverines, 13-12, on September 13. Senior kicker Max Skirkanich drilled two 30-plus yard field goals and junior defensive end Matei Fitz had a huge tackle for a loss to end a Tuscarora goal line stand early in the second quarter.

4. Woodgrove (2-1) -1
Woodgrove suffered a 1-point loss to Tuscarora on September 13, but the Wolverines are still poised to be a Top 4 team throughout the remainder of the season. The Wolverines have offensive weapons in senior quarterback Brett Johnson, senior running back KJ Lewis, junior receiver Bailey Burton, and sophomore tight end Price Williams and played tremendously defensively. They’ll need to clean up their special teams, if they want to compete at the top of the VHSL 5A.

5. John Champe (2-1) +1
After a big win over B.T. Washington to open its season, John Champe fell to perennial power Westfield, 37-14, in Week 2. However, the Knights rebounded with a shutout win over Briar Woods on September 13. John Champe’s defense is going to keep them in most games, so expect the Knights to hover around the Top 5 all year.
