Loudoun County, Va. — As the high school field hockey season starts in Loudoun County, one local team has started to stand out from the crowd, while several others are potential contenders. In a three-district county, we wanted a way to put things into perspective. Enter: the LoCo Top 5.
Of course, if you’re into hard numbers, check out the full Cedar Run District, Potomac District, and Dulles District standings.
[adrotate banner=”10″]1. Riverside (0-0, 7-0) —
This past week Riverside cruised past No. 4 Loudoun County, and also went out and won the Westfield Bulldog Invitational in thrilling fashion, with easy victories over Colonial Forge and Lafayette and overtime victories over perennial state powerhouses Westfield and Mountain View.
Next up: Riverside hosts No. 3 Dominion on September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Riverside
2. Heritage (0-0, 7-1) —
With the Riverside loss in the rearview window, Heritage has beaten all other opponents, winning the Justice Wolves Invitational along the way. Through their 7-game win streak, the Pride have outscored opponents 30-3 and posted four shutouts. Riding that win streak, Heritage gets a week off before starting district play the following week.
Next up: Heritage travels to Freedom on September 23 at 6:45 p.m. at Rock Ridge
3. Dominion (0-0, 5-0) +2
Dominion used a Herculean effort from goalkeeper Hannah Johnston – a Ball State commit – to stave off a persistent Briar Woods squad, with Johnston stopping two penalty strokes by Falcon senior Kyra Vlassis. The Titans also shut out Woodgrove and held off Stone Bridge this past week.
Next up: Dominion travels to No. 1 Riverside on September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Riverside
4. Loudoun County (0-0, 4-1) -1
Loudoun County bounced back by rolling past Rock Ridge, 6-0, on September 11 after getting shut out by No. 1 Riverside, 8-0, on September 9.
Next up: Loudoun County travels to Stone Bridge on September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Stone Bridge
5. Broad Run (0-0, 4-3) +3
The Broad Run Spartans jump into the LoCo Top 5 following a 2-0 win over previously ranked Freedom. Don’t let that 4-3 record fool you. The Spartans – led by senior captain and Iowa-commit Kelly Rose – are undefeated in county play with close losses only in a tournament where they challenged themselves, losing to three VHSL 6A teams: South County, Robinson, and Chantilly. Broad Run gets power points for those losses, despite losing.
Next up: Broad Run travels to Woodgrove on September 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Woodgrove
