Loudoun County, Va. — If you have ever played a sport, you have probably experienced some type of injury, whether it be a concussion or a broken foot. The most common sports injuries occur due to acute trauma or overuse of a joint. Acute trauma is an injury that occurs due to force from a fall or tackle. These types of injuries have immediate sharp pain and swelling, and usually lead to a trip to the emergency room.

What are the most common acute trauma injuries?
Sprains
A sprain occurs when one or more of the ligaments supporting a joint are stretched or torn. Sprains most commonly occur in your ankles, knees and wrists, but can also occur in you back, neck, and shoulders.
Strains
Strains refer to an injury of the muscle or its attaching tendon. A muscle can be strained during heavy lifting, fast acceleration, or when pushing a muscle harder than it has previously been worked.
Shin Splints
Shin splints are most common in sports that require a lot of running. They usually occur due to poor alignment of the body, or weakness in the leg muscles.
How can you prevent injuries?
Proper training, good technique, strengthening, and stretching are the most important elements to preventing sports injuries. One way to ensure you are strengthening your body and muscles is through cross training. Cross training is when you engage in two or more sports to improve fitness, and stimulate your body and muscles in a different way than normal. This type of training helps to identify and improve any hidden deficits or weaknesses.
