Portland, Or. — When the Loudoun Valley High School boys cross country team scored 89 points at the Nike Cross Nationals in 2017, the running world took notice. Only four boys teams had ever scored less than 100 points at the event, and no boys team had ever broken 90.
So when the Vikings made the trip to Portland, Oregon on December 1, there was a giant target on their backs.
Led by All-LoCo standouts Sam Affolder, Kellen Hasle, Jacob Hunter and Carlos Shultz, the Vikings scored 77 points, shattering the record they had set just a year before, while becoming the first boys team in NXN history to win back-to-back national championships.
