Sterling, Va. — Just a week after rolling over Dulles District foe Riverside, Woodgrove High School dominated Dominion in shutout fashion. The Wolverines controlled all three phases of the game to spoil the Titans’ Homecoming, their senior night and their first game on their brand new turf field, 42-0.
“Our goal every year is to try and win the district one game at a time,” Woodgrove senior quarterback Graham Walker said. “We have great momentum and team chemistry. These guys are my best friends.”
[adrotate group=”4″]Woodgrove got the scoring started when junior running back KJ Lewis scored on an 11-yard rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter.
The Wolverines really got rolling after senior lineman Jordan Berkowitz blocked Dominion senior Tony Lampe’s 33-yard field goal attempt at the 8:41 mark of the second quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Walker connected with senior receiver Nick Lockhart – who was in double coverage – for a 25-yard touchdown.
“Special teams played well,” Walker said. “We emphasized making tackles on kickoffs, and I think they did a great job.”
Then on the ensuing kickoff, Woodgrove surprised the Titans’ return team with an onside kick. Woodgrove recovered the kick and got their second score in a two-minute span when Walker found Lockhart wide open in the end zone for his second receiving touchdown of the first half.
“We have some of the best receivers,” Walker said. “They are all huge and can make plays. The offensive line gave great protection, without them our big receivers can’t make those plays for us.”
The Wolverines’ offense rolled, scoring six touchdowns on 405 all-purpose yards. Woodgrove’s defense suffocated Dominion’s offense by allowing them just 63 yards of total offense and only four first downs in the game.
“Our defense made us look great,” Walker said. “Especially when we had some struggles early. The defense really stepped it up tonight.”
Woodgrove (4-2) – which has scored 40 or more points in each of its last three games – will look to stay red hot when they host Heritage (5-3) in Purcellville. Dominion (3-4) will look to bounce back on October 19 when the Titans host Loudoun County (6-0) in Sterling.
