Loudoun County, Va. — As high school football gets underway in Loudoun County, a few local teams have already started to stand out among the crowd. In a two-district county, we wanted a way to put things into perspective. Enter: the LoCo Top 5.
Of course, if you’re into hard numbers, check out the full VHSL Region 5C and VHSL Region 4C standings.
[adrotate group=”4″]1. Stone Bridge (4-0) ?1
For the first time all season, we have a new No. 1 in Loudoun. Through four games, Stone Bridge is averaging nearly 51 points of offense per game, while surrendering less than 10. A 41-point average margin of victory is going to be hard for any team to overcome. The Bulldogs should continue to live up to expectation with just a couple real threats left on their schedule: an October 19 match up with Tuscarora and a November 2 battle at Broad Run.
2. Broad Run (4-1) ?1
After holding the top spot in the LoCo Top 5 through the first four weeks, the Broad Run Spartans slip to No. 2 following Week 5, not because of their play, but because of the play of No. 1 Stone Bridge. Broad Run continues to impress, most recently shutting out Rock Ridge, 41-0, on September 21. Through five games, the Spartans are surrendering less than six points per game on average to opposing offenses. Broad Run has a bye in Week 6 before hosting B.T. Washington in Ashburn on October 5.
3. Tuscarora (3-2) —
After suffering a 42-28 loss to Woodgrove on September 14, Tuscarora needed a win to get back on track. Despite having the pieces to roll through the bottom half of the Potomac District, the Huskies had a scare against Briar Woods on September 21, but Tuscarora came out on top, 35-23. Tuscarora should roll through Week 6 and 7 against Rock Ridge and Freedom, respectively, before it’s next test against No. 1 Stone Bridge in Week 9.
4. Loudoun County (5-0) ?2
The newest addition to our LoCo Top 5, Loudoun County is simply fun to watch. Senior quarterback Nick Barts has led his team to a historic start, going 5-0 for the first time in more than two decades. Barts has a wealth of weapons at his disposable, and he uses them all effectively. In a battle against previously unbeaten Riverside on September 21, Barts connected on four touchdown passes, two to senior receiver Derek McCandless and two to junior receiver Joseph Groves. On top of the offensive firepower, the Raiders’ defense is no joke, earning back-to-back shut outs in Weeks 4 and 5.
5. Woodgrove (2-2) ?1
Enjoying a bye in Week 5, Woodgrove has another bye in Week 6 as the Wolverines were slated to play Park View, whose season was cut short before it even started. After scoring just 13 points combined in two games against Massaponax and Broad Run, Woodgrove piled on the touchdowns against No. 3 Tuscarora in a major early season win on September 14. The Wolverines will look to remain on track when they start their Dulles District schedule at Riverside on October 5.
