Sterling, Va. – Loudoun Valley High School traveled to Park View High School looking to spoil the Patriots’ Homecoming game and earn their first win of the season. The Vikings did that with a lot of help from senior running back John Rock Swartz’s seven total touchdowns en route to a 62-28 victory.
“We got a lot of confidence from the running game tonight,” Loudoun Valley head coach Anthony Long said. “Rock did an awesome job running the ball.”
[adrotate banner=”19″]The Vikings started the game off strong with a decent kick return close to midfield. Then they drove down the field finding the end zone just two minutes into the game thanks to a 6-yard touchdown run by Swartz.
The Park View offense responded with a scoring drive of their own. Midway through the first quarter, Park View senior quarterback Tony Lampe dropped back to pass and found senior wide out Dio Avilies in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pitch-and-catch.
Then midway through the second quarter, Loudoun Valley took over the game and never looked back when Swartz scored a 26-yard rushing touchdown. That score was the first of 28 unanswered points for the Vikings’ offense.
“We started off a little slow tonight, but we’ve had a rough season so far,” Long said. “So once we got rolling, everything started to go really well for us.”
The Loudoun Valley offense closed out the first half scoring when senior quarterback Derek Goings found Swartz on a half back screen for a 50-yard touchdown pass with under a minute to play in the second quarter. The score by Swartz was his fifth touchdown of the first half.
The Park View offense opened the second half with a five-minute drive that was capped off by Lampe finding senior wide receiver Josue Miguel for a 5-yard touchdown reception, cutting the Vikings lead to 21 points.
The Vikings’ offense, however, put the game out of reach when Swartz scored his fifth and sixth rushing touchdowns of the night late in the third quarter.
“We have faced some tough teams so far,” Long said. “Mentally we just needed to gain some confidence tonight and we did.”
The Patriots (0-5) will have their hands full once again next week when they travel to Purcellville to play the Wolverines of Woodgrove High School on September 28.
The Vikings (1-3) return home to host the Pride of Heritage High School as they look to get on a roll following their first win of the year.
“If we can handle things upfront, things will continue to go well for us,” Long said.
