Leesburg (February 7, 2017) — Loudoun County High School senior Amy Eck has made a commitment to continue her gymnastics career at The College of Brockport, State University of New York starting in the 2017-2018 school year.
“I fell in love with the coach, team, gym and everything about Brockport. The girls on the team were all obviously very happy there and I could tell that they were very much a family, which was one of the biggest things I wanted in a college team,” 5-foot-1 Eck said. “I heard great things about the coach when I first started recruiting, so I had to see for myself. One of my old teammates does gymnastics there, so I got to stay with her when I visited and she showed me around.”
Eck has dreamed of competing in college gymnastics since she was a little girl and feels confident in her decision to become a Golden Eagle.
“It’s relaxing because I don’t have to worry about more college acceptances, which means I have a lot less on my plate. It’s also very exciting because Brockport was my first choice and I’ve always dreamed of doing college gymnastics,” Eck said. “Plus, I get to start stocking up on Brockport gear!”
SUNY Brockport women’s gymnastics team has kept their winning streak alive this season and are currently 6-0 after defeating Ithaca College and Rhode Island College in a tri-meet hosted by the Ithaca Bombers on January 21.
“I hope at Brockport that I will add the family feeling, help people keep spirits high, and be a strong contributor to an already amazing team!” Eck said.
Eck knew she found her passion when she hit the mat for the first time 14 years ago.
“My parents put me in gymnastics and instantly fell in love with and have loved it more and more the past 13 years,” Eck said. “I have always been motivated to work hard and get better to be the best gymnast I can.”
The Raider credits her parents and her coaches for getting her where she is today.
“My parents have motivated me through their support and belief that I can do anything I set my mind to,” Eck said. “My coaches have motivated me because they’ve always seen my potential and have worked with me to help me reach it.”
At APEX Gymnastics – her club facility in Leesburg – Eck can forget about her responsibilities or any other stressors.
“APEX has helped shape me into the person I am today and everyone there means so much to me,” Eck said. “Even when I’m frustrated with gymnastics, I’d rather be at APEX than anywhere else!”
The Leesburg-native is looking forward to competing on the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise at the collegiate level.
