Leesburg (Jan. 31, 2015) – On a windy Friday night, Tuscarora High School and Briar Woods High School boys and girls basketball teams met to play a varsity doubleheader. The Tuscarora Lady Huskies defeated the Lady Falcons, 77-49. In the boys edition, the Falcons defeated the Huskies, 75-52.
The Lady Huskies controlled the pace of the game led by senior guard Alexis Bailey. Accounting for 23 Tuscarora points, Bailey was the deciding factor in her team’s 28-point win. Bailey was not the only shooter on fire for the Lady Huskies though as senior guard Kelly Troilo scored 9 late-game points upon returning to the court in the second half.
As the Lady Falcons and Huskies hit the locker room for their post game talks, the boys took the court to begin game two of the double feature.
Led by senior guard Connor Gaines, Briar Woods was able to pound the paint and put up a huge 75 points. Briar Woods worked the ball into their big men in the first half and maintained a 5-point lead heading into halftime.
“Those guys have been here all year. We were riding Conner [Gaines] and Branden Curry early on and Lucas [Martin] finally found his niche. In the last six or seven games he’s been a dominant force out there. We’ve been getting one or two of those guys a night and when you get all three of them that’s a tough team to beat,” Briar Woods head coach Kip Shallis said.
Briar Woods kicked the ball to their outside shooters in the second half relying on junior guard Branden Curry to score the bulk of their points.
Gaines and junior center Lucas Martin went double-double as they reeled in a combined 22 rebounds and accounted for 24 points. Curry added 16 points, shooting 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
“This is my first year [coaching here],” said Shallis who was previously the head coach at John Champe High School. “I’ve been at this school [teaching]for six years; I’ve followed these kids forever and they couldn’t be a closer team right now.”
