Leesburg, Va. — Heritage High School freshman Julia Welch claimed the all-around title at the VHSL Region 4C championship at her home school on February 10, leading the Pride to the team title. Loudoun Valley senior Jenna Haran led the Vikings to the team runner up, placing second in the individual all-around. Welch used a win on the vault (9.775), bars (9.075) and floor (9.475) to win the all-around (37.500), defeating Haran by less than one point. South Riding, Va. — Led by junior Andrew Blusiewicz, senior Ashley Bogushefsky, junior Kelli McMillan, and senior Rachel Schlemmer, the Dominion High School boys and girls swim teams swept the Dulles District championships on February 8 in South Riding. Blusiewicz won the 200-yard individual medley and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle; Bogushefsky won the 50-yard freestyle and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke; McMillian won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles; and Schlemmer won the 100-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle. Sterling, Va. — Led by sophomore Mackenzie Cunnane, senior Abby Harter, and junior Mackenzie McConagha, the Briar Woods High School girls swim team claimed their third straight VHSL Region 5C championship on February 8 in Sterling. Cunnane won the 50-yard freestyle and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle, Harter won the 200-yard individual medley, and McConagha won the 100-yard backstroke. Sterling, Va. — Led by juniors Christopher Kopac and Robert Quan the Riverside High School boys swim team finished runners up at the VHSL Region 5C championship on February 8 in Sterling. Kopac won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, while Quan won the 200-yard individual medley and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke. South Riding, Va. — Eight Loudoun schools – including Broad Run, Dominion, John Champe, Loudoun Valley, Potomac Falls, Riverside, Stone Bridge, and host Freedom – competed in the Starfish Invitational at Freedom High School in South Riding on January 25.
